National Disability Employment Awareness Month
October 3, 2012, Washington, DC – October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind (CLB) is a leader in training and employing people who are blind or visually impaired. Currently, 67% of all of CLB’s 83 employees are blind or visually impaired.
Of that percentage, 53 employees work at one of CLB’s 8 government contract sites.
Through CLB’s computer training classes, skills are gained on the usage of adaptive software that can speak or magnify. Training is in place for veterans, Bridge to Work, where veterans learn the skill of digital data scan. Also, CLB teaches braille in English and Spanish languages and produces braille books for the DC Public School system.
In addition, CLB’s President and CEO, Tony Cancelosi, speaks to the importance of job training and employment for persons with disabilities, as he serves on 3 appointed, workforce-boards.
This month CLB will participate in different employers’ awareness month events such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s exhibit on Tuesday, October 23, in Silver Spring, MD.
