People with diabetes are more likely to develop diseases that cause blindness, such as diabetic retinopathy. Even with the prevalence of diabetes, there is still a lack of awareness that these are potential diseases that can occur.
Diabetic retinopathy is a condition that develops when the blood vessels in the eye are damaged. Type 1 and type 2 diabetes can cause blindness and become more likely the longer blood sugars go uncontrolled.
If you have been recently diagnosed with diabetes, please consult your doctor about getting control of your blood sugar so you can mitigate the chances of developing diabetic retinopathy.
