One of CLB’s orientation and mobility specialists, Rachael Kelly, noticed the pattern between isolation created by vision loss being exacerbated by the addition of language barriers of those who do not communicate fluently in English. Since there are currently no support groups for Spanish speaking clients who are visually impaired, she decided to create one. With the help of Maria Proschan of the Department of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) in Maryland, a group was organized and the first meeting was held in March. The topic was “El baston, amigo o enemigo?” (translation: The cane, friend or foe?) and it was a great success. Meetings are held monthly on the 4th Tuesday at CLB’s Silver Spring office.
